October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
THINK PINK
Years ago, I lost my mother to breast cancer when she was only 48 years old. Since then, we have made tremendous progress in the fight against the disease, but the search for a cure continues.
Thankfully, October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is why I take this opportunity every year to raise awareness in my mom’s memory. Organized as an international health campaign by countless breast cancer charities, the goal is to increase awareness and raise funds to help eliminate the disease. With nearly 230,000 women and men estimated to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year alone, the need for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure is more important than ever.
Here at Celadon, we are proud to “THINK PINK” in partnership with Éminence Organics, our favorite all-natural skincare line. Now through October 31, we will be donating 100% of all “pink” product sales to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, including cleansers, toniques, moisturizers and masques in the Sweet Red Rose and Strawberry Rhubarb product collections. Or shop pink with any product from the Kerastase Crystalliste collection—the perfect haircare system for long hair with dry ends. We’ll even be donating our proceeds from Essie’s Breast Cancer Awareness collection—four perfectly pink lacquer shades to honor survivors and their families.
Of course, our “THINK PINK” campaign wouldn’t be complete without a special service line-up. Try our Organic Rose Facial with Eminence's Sweet Red Rose Cleanser, Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque and legendary Rose Whip Moisturizer to sooth and restore sensitive, sun-damaged or mature skin. Or book an Essie mani/pedi and choose from our favorite rose hues like Check-Up, I am Strong and Good Morning Hope. As always, a portion of all October’s “PINK” services will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
Thanks for your support!
KEVYN AUCOIN COSMETICS:
Makeup Artist to the Stars
As one of the makeup industry's most celebrated artists, Kevyn Aucoin has long been adored by models, photographers, and other high-profile celebrities for his creativity with product and technique.
With a portfolio that includes 18 of Vogue’s cover models (Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Kate Moss, just to name a few), Aucoin began making over women in the early 1980s as he continued to gain a cult following among Hollywood A-listers. He even remade the likes of several male celebrities—the most famous, of course, basketball star Dennis Rodman, who was transformed in full drag as he arrived at a New York publicity event for the launch of his autobiography!
After the release of three books full of celebrity portraits and timeless beauty tips, Aucoin finally launched his fist long-awaited product line, including mascara, an eyelash curler and makeup brush set. He once explained, "I want there to be function in everything I do; my favorite word is effective."
Thankfully, the Kevyn Aucoin line now includes a full range of products, including foundation, shadows, lipsticks and more. Here, at Celadon, our favorite is the Sensual Skin Enhancer, a versatile skin-perfecting product that glides on like a light foundation but offers the coverage of a concealer. We also love the felt tip Precision Liquid Liner in black, our artists' favorite tool for creating the dramatic winged eye—very on-trend for fall. Also spotted across runways this season were shades of mulberry and cranberry—Kevyn's 'Dantrice' and 'Carliana' are beautiful options, or of course, his legendry matte red in 'Everlasting'.
Come in today for a free "Eyes and Lips for Fall" mini-makeover with Shana Swain, Celadon's newest makeup artist. Or book a full 60-minute makeup application now through September 30, and save $50, plus receive a free mascara (a $25 value)!
From Nail Polish to Nail FASHION:
Deborah Lippmann for Hands, Nails & Feet
This summer’s hottest accessory is color, and there’s no quicker way to add color to your look than with a fresh coat of nail lacquer. On trend for summer 2012 are classic reds, chic corals, pearlescent pastels, and bold yellows mixed in with dramatic ombre and metallic designs.
While nail color is one of the simplest, no-fuss ways to revamp your look, the latest in cosmetic technology has transformed simple nail polish into nail fashion. Take Deborah Lippmann’s line, for instance, a high-end varnish that is long-lasting, easy to apply, chip resistant, and available in a wide array of colors and finishes including metallic, sheer, creme, opaque shimmer, sheer shimmer and opaque opalescent. Not only does her color glide on evenly with every application, it’s free of the "toxic trio" of ingredients—toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate (DBP)—which means a safer mani/pedi every time.
As one of the most sought after manicurists in the world (A-list celebrity clients include Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon and Penelope Cruz, just to name a few), Deborah’s treatments for hands, nails and feet are coveted by stylish socialites and fashion houses alike. Just try one of her latest summer shades, such as Mermaid’s Dream, Naked and On the Beach. Or try her Rich Girl Hand Cream with SPF 25 (our favorite!), which not only has super moisturizing shea butter, jojoba and olive oils, but also a “botanical lightening complex” of grape, mulberry and saxifraga (a perennial plant) extract to gently help fade away those tell-tale signs of aging – the dreaded 'age-spot'. It was actually voted Health Magazine’s winner for “Healthiest Hand Cream,” by leading dermatologists!
Our favorite skincare line, Éminence, for example, will now package its sunscreen products with a standard drug facts box on the outer packaging, including the active ingredients, uses, warnings, directions, and a full ingredient list. (Éminence contains zinc oxide, one of the safest and most effective single active sunscreen ingredients, protecting skin by scattering and absorbing ultraviolet rays). In addition, products that offer protection from these ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) will be referred to as Broad Spectrum.
P.S. – For 20% off all Deborah Lippmann products now through July 31st, stop by the spa or visit us online (promo code deblip2012).
New FDA-Mandated Sun Protection Guidelines
Mean Better Care for Your Skin
Summer is almost here, which means warm, sunny days could potentially damage your skin. With my fair complexion and tendency to get sun spots and blotches, I am especially vigilant about preventing sunburn and keeping away those wrinkles! Even my Greek husband, who has olive skin, was diagnosed with melanoma a few years ago – so no one is safe!
Thankfully, new FDA-mandated sun protection guidelines will make safe skin care easier than ever before. In the coming months, you may notice some changes to the packaging of all sunscreen products in the USA. This is due to the new guidelines issued by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which are designed to help make it easier for consumers to use and purchase sunscreen. As of December 17, 2012, all sunscreen products in the United States must be compliant with these new regulations.
The packaging changes by the FDA are designed to provide a standardized format for product information and to make it easy to identify the key active ingredients, product features and directions for use.
At Celadon, we understand the importance of sun protection. Now, with these new guidelines outlined by the FDA, we can be sure that our clients are able to best defend themselves from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which contribute to premature aging and skin cancer.
Try our favorite sun care products today, including Éminence Tropical Vanilla Suncream with SPF 30 and SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50, which has a nice tint and dries quickly without any residue.
Enjoy the summer, safely!
The Power of Fragrance...
(and why lavender reminds me of Mom)
This month we celebrate Mother's Day, and nothing reminds me more of my mother than the wonder of fragrance.
Growing up in the English countryside with parents who were avid gardeners, springtime always brought bunches of fragrant narcissus, blue-bells and lily-of-the-valley. In summer, we enjoyed roses, geraniums, and my mother’s favorite flower—freesias—but possibly the most long-lasting scent in our home was lavender, which we picked and dried before making little sachets to put in the linen closet. Today, I still keep lavender in my drawers and closets to remind me of my mother, and often wear one of her favorite perfumes, Annick Goutal’s L’Eau d’Hadrien, an amazing blend of citrus scents. Just one whiff of it takes me right back to my childhood home and being with her.
Fragrances have the power to take us back to special places, people and moments in our lives, just like I remember my mother’s lavender sachets or lemon soaps. (Some researchers believe that this phenomenon is caused by odor "imprinting".) Many natural scents also offer unique health benefits, stimulating the brain to trigger a reaction that promotes well-being. In fact, there are approximately 40 different aromas, either on their own or in various combinations, that have a significant effect on emotion, memory and/or task performance. At Celadon, some of our favorites include:
- Lavender, which promotes relaxation, fights insomnia and ease aches and pains. It is also effective in dealing with more serious ailments, such as migraine headaches.
- Lemon has been shown to possess anti-depressant-type effects, making it a good choice for increased energy, heightened mental clarity and mood enhancement.
- Rose has been known to alleviate depression and for some, has a measurable impact on feelings of love and the erotic response.
- Lilac aids in decision making and improves memory.
- Magnolia restores or maintains youth, brings love, and increases intellectual powers.
- Sage has long been known to rid negative energy, reduce anxiety, slow down the nervous system, and act as an anti-inflammatory.
- Jasmine stimulates creativity and originality, and attracts spiritual love. The scent has also been known to alleviates anxiety and depression.
- Rosemary, a stimulant that promotes alertness, is used as an herbal scent remedy for those who suffer with depression, headache, and indigestion problems.
With so many healing benefits, we are celebrating the power of fragrance during the month of May with elizabethW, a San Francisco-based perfumery that uses quality ingredients for bath, body and home. The founder's great grandmother inspired the line of handcrafted products, so what better what to honor Moms everywhere than with her perfumes, soaps, body lotions, gels, candles, and more.
My personal favorites are of course the lavender line! But my second favorite would have to be the Leaves fragrance, which has the fresh scent of green spring leaves—perfect for both men and women.
Enjoy!
BioDynamic Skin Care —
Taking Natural Ingredients One Step Further
Spring is arriving all around us in a beautiful kaleidoscope of greens and vibrant color, and at Celadon for the month of April we are celebrating the power and energy of plants.
April 22 is Earth Day, and we are highlighting some of our favorite lines in the store which are organic, and even beyond organic—BioDynamic.
What is BioDynamic? While we've all heard about natural or organic skin care products, a BioDynamic approach to healthy skin goes one step further. Organic and biodynamic are very similar; both are grown without chemicals and GMOs. However, Biodynamic is just that extra bit more. Originating from a balanced, holistic view of the universe, BioDynamic farming regards the farm as a self-supporting ecosystem that lives and breathes. It is a holistic practice where all things are considered living inter-related systems—animals, plants, and the solar system—and seeds are sown and plants are harvested according to the lunar cycle to enhance and capture their most vital phyto-energy. With the over-processing of soil in today’s farming, plants are losing their nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Biodynamic farming creates plants that are unusually high in nutrients and active compounds. When we eat these plants we are consuming this vitality and feeding our cells with it, or in the case of skin care, when we apply nutrient-rich products to the skin, we’re feeding our skin, leaving us with a radiant, beautiful complexion.
Many believe that since our skin is the largest organ of the body, what we put on it should be pure enough to eat. If you want to take your beauty regime to an even deeper level with active compounds that are unusually high in nutrients, consider BioDynamic products for the ultimate in pureness and results-driven skin care.
The Eminence Beyond Organic collection that we are featuring this month is perfect for even the most sensitive skin and all the products include a minimum of 95% organic ingredients and up to 88% Biodynamic ingredients, which are certified by Demeter International, the gold standard in organic farming regulations worldwide.
And, of course, it goes without saying, but like all organic skin care, BioDynamic products are made without phthalates, parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, mineral oils, paraffins, silicones, artificial fragrances, dyes, and other chemicals found in many beauty products. So, not only does your skin benefit, but you avoid absorbing these toxins throughout your entire body!
My personal favorites are the Bearberry Eye Repair Cream — with Eyebright to help those puffy morning eyes, and the delicious Apricot Calendula Nourishing Cream, which is perfect for soothing dry skin after the drier winter months.
